Thinking about Painting
The landscape became a mysterious magical place
I have always drawn and painted, from a child I think it was an escape into a part of the world that I could exercise my imagination, more so than words or numbers – I would dream in images of place and moments.
We spent our holidays in rural Dorset and I grew up looking out the window of mum and dads Morris Traveller trundling back and forth from suburban London through Wessex tom Dorset.
The landscape became a mysterious magical place, it instilled itself in me then. Having a visual knack seemed to lead a path ahead of me that I have continued – whether it be conscious or unconscious it is a thing that has always been, and where I am now so far.
The land and its unfolding distance and mystery, its close of touch at my hands and feet and the distance of place in my gaze. As the landscape goes on, so does my subject, not just the immediate view out my window but through travels to further places.

The process of learning a practical discipline such as painting, can seem both daunting and frustrating. In the landscape and the studio I assess each individual student’s ability and use this as a starting point, trying to keep the teaching just beyond the curve of what they can and want to do.
